Moreover, passengers can make use of the sheltered waiting area and toilets while waiting for their train services.

Butterworth Railway Station in Butterworth, Penang, is easily reached via Federal Route 1 and the Butterworth Outer Ring Route (E17). The station is near the Penang Sentral bus terminal and the Sultan Abdul Hamid Ferry Terminal, making transfers from George Town straightforward for passengers. 

The station serves the KTM Komuter Line to Padang Besar and offers connections to Thailand Railway Services, which includes destinations like Bangkok and Hat Yai. Additionally, it is a stop on the West Coast Railway Line for KTM ETS trains traveling between Gemas and Butterworth. 

The station has an indoor waiting area, toilets, and a convenience store. However, it lacks restaurant services and luggage facilities. Passengers can find ticket counters on the station’s second floor.

How to Get to Penang (George Town) from Butterworth

To reach Penang (George Town) from Butterworth, passengers can use the Rapid Ferry service. The ferry departs from the Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal, located a 15-minute walk from the Butterworth Railway Station. Directional signs and a free shuttle bus from the bus station in front of the railway station entrance are available to assist passengers in reaching the terminal.

The ferry takes 15 to 20 minutes to reach George Town, operating every 20 to 30 minutes (with a sanitization break), from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm. Ticket prices are MYR 1.20 for adults and MYR 0.60 for children (5 to 12 years old), with free entry for children below five years. Tickets can be bought at the terminal. The ferry terminates at the Pengkalan Weld seafront road in George Town, allowing passengers immediate access to the city’s attractions.

How to Get to the City from the Terminal

After arriving at Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda by ferry, passengers will walk through a passageway to reach the Weld Quay Ferry & Bus Terminal at ground level. This terminal is a central point where visitors can find buses to various destinations in Penang.

A taxi stand is also available next to the bus terminal for those who prefer this option. However, it’s important to note that taxis in Penang typically don’t use meters, so passengers should negotiate and agree on the fare with the driver before starting the journey.
